BMW Concept Active Tourer : A Brief Look Under the Hood

BMW has earned itself a lot of attention in the past 6 months because of their unexpected decision to produce a front-wheel drive - The Concept Active Tourer. Not only is this new FWD the German manufacturer's first but it is also a hybrid vehicle in its concept form, which is likely to be the high-end production version of the car.

A Brief Look Under the Hood

The hybrid combines BMW's brand new 1.5l, 3 cylinder engine (the B38) with a rear-wheel mounted electrical motor that is capable of packing a 67bhp punch. Charged by a massive rechargeable lithium ion battery, that is integrated into the floor of the vehicle, the Active Tourer can rear-wheel drive the car for around 18 miles on electricity alone.

This combination does of course make the car an all wheel drive in its complete form, however, the front-wheel mounted engine confirms that entry-level versions of this model will be a FWD as standard.

The Active Concept Tourer is expected to be released as a new addition to the BMW 1 Series as a GT model in 2014.
