Supercars To Be Built in Yorkshire

Ok, the British car industry might not be what it used to be in the 70s but don’t write it off yet. We’ve got plenty of independent car manufacturers and it looks like another one is joining in the fun.

It was recently announced that Yorkshire-based Zcars has teamed up with a little-known American company "500 Group" and a slightly better known American company General Motors Performance Parts to begin building an affordable supercar in 2014. The first prototype car has already been made roadworthy and registered in the UK and it’s currently undergoing tweaking and development.

The formula is very simple, or shall I say used to be very simple (because not many independents are using it these days). If we look back in time to the independent post-war car manufacturers in Europe, they often went for a light body coupled with a proper American Chevy V8 engine. A fail-free combination. It sometimes seems that the Chevy V8 is as old as the whole car industry but actually there are very few engines that are better than this.

So the new supercar will incorporate a tubular frame, carbon compound body and the lovely V8. The configuration and customisation of the car will be up to the client but depending on the engine choice, the power will range from 452 to 694BHP.

That does sound like a lot, however, it gets better if you look at the BHP to tonne equation. The Supercar with 630BHP/tonne leaves the Bugatti Veyron far behind with 593BHP/tonne. Lamborghini Aventador? Just 444BHP/tonne.

The new car is supposed to be affordable. And considering that the majority of the parts come from GM, the maintenance shouldn’t be too expensive either. The prices will start at around £44,000. What else can you buy for a similar amount of money? Morgan Roadster 3.7, Lotus Elise S, Porsche Cayman and Chevrolet Camaro 6.2.

The only thing that might possibly be quicker than the Zcars’ Supercar is the special edition Ariel Atom. Its 500BHP V8 engine allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds but you have to keep in mind that the Atom only weighs 500kg – that’s 1000BHP/tonne.

Zcars has been previously known as manufacturers of race frame kits for Austin Minis. The frames are meant for DIY enthusiasts who want to convert their Minis into proper sports cars. Zcars have their own factory based in Hull. It used to be a farm but very soon it’s going to be manufacturing supercars. How cool is that?

Currently the Ango-American joint venture is called Supercar System but I’m sure they’ll come up with a more marketable name for the car once it’s launched.
