The Top 10 Green Cars of 2014

With significant rises in gas prices over the years, the demand for greener and more fuel efficient cars is on the rise. There is a need to search for the best alternative fuels for our car. Fuel efficient cars are desirable not just because they are better for your wallet, but also because they are good for the environment. To top it all, governments across the world are offering tax incentives on some of the greener cars too.

Here is a compilation of my top 10 green cars of 2014.

#1 Tesla Model S


Who says power and fuel efficiency can't go hand in hand. Tesla's Model S is a premium luxury EV sedan, which has been built as a pure electric vehicle. Model S comes with 3 Li-ion battery options. The 85kWh battery provides 265 miles range for a single charge. The vehicle does 0-62mph dash in 4.6 seconds, thanks to the 362 hp of power under the hood, which is very impressive for an electric vehicle.

#2 Ford Focus Electric

The Focus is a 5-door hatchback from Ford's stable. Focus Electric is a rechargeable full electric vehicle from Ford. The car delivers a fantastic fuel efficiency of 105 MPGe (i.e. Miles per gallon equivalent). The car has a 143 hp electric motor that gives it a range of 76 miles in a single charge. Thanks to its amazing fuel efficiency, Ford electric was awarded with green car of the year 2011 at Washington Auto Show.

#3 Toyota Avalon Hybrid


If you want a vehicle that is known and celebrated for being eco-friendly, then you would like to consider buying 2013 Toyota Avalon. With its new features and a brand new look this year, Toyota Avalon made its place in the top ten alternate fuel cars. The Avalon Hybrid pack includes 204 cells with a power-control unit located in the engine bay and features both an inverter and a DC-DC converter. Toyota Avalon Hybrid has been named as the Best Green Car' at the 2013 Atlanta International Auto Show.

#4 Toyota Prius


In our opinion, this is the best car for the money. With 53 mpg and 46 MPH highway, Toyota Prius is the most cost effective car in the segment. Some of the other pros of the car include exceptional fuel economy, space efficient interiors and a generous number of standard features.

#5 Honda Fit EV


Fit EV is a 5-door compact car from Honda. Fit EV is an all-electric vehicle. This amazing compact from Honda is really frugal when it comes to fuel efficiency. The vehicle delivers fuel efficiency of 118 MPGe, which makes it one of the most fuel efficient cars available in the market. Fit EV has a 123 hp motor, which generates enough power to keep the driving fun alive.

#6 Chevrolet Volt


Chevy's Volt has to be one of the best looking hybrid vehicle's out there. It's a front wheel drive vehicle that is powered by an electric motor and a 1.4 litre gasoline engine. Volt is not a like a typical hybrid vehicle. The car can run on pure electric motor for around 38 miles, after which the gasoline engine chips in to power the electric motors. The engine produces ample 149 hp of power. The gasoline engine helps in extending the range of the vehicle to about 300 miles. This makes it a much more practical option as compared to pure electric vehicles.

#7 Ford C-Max Energi


Ford C-Max Energi wagon is a hybrid car that has made a mark for itself as a practical green car. C-Max Energi comes with a 2-litre four cylinder gasoline engine that is paired with an electric motor, together they generate 188 hp of power. The electric engine alone gives a range of 21 miles with top speed of 85 miles an hour. The vehicle achieves a fuel efficiency of 100MPGe, which is one of the best in its category.

#8 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid


Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is from the stable of Lincoln Motor Company, which essentially is a subsidiary of Ford. Lincoln MKZ Hybrid shares platform with Ford Fusion Hybrid, but it's the more premium version of the Fusion. The hybrid engine produces a combined power of 191 hp and the vehicle can clock upto 62 mph speed in pure electric mode. The car delivers combined fuel economy of 39 mpg. The hybrid engine allows car to have a long range of well over 600 miles. Apart from greener technology, the vehicle also packs in many features that makes this mid-size luxury car a worthy contender amongst green cars.

#9 Nissan Leaf


The revamped 2013 Nissan LEAF has been named to the top spot on Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com's list of 10 Best Green Cars of 2013. With approximately 90 to 100 miles of all-electric range on a full battery, the Nissan Leaf provides plenty of distance for around-town jaunts. Nissan Leaf offers a better balance of range, practicality, refinement and value for money.

#10 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid

This sporty, conventional looking compact sedan has 45 mpg in combined city-highway driving. The hybrid Jetta uses a 150-horsepower turbocharged 1.4 liter four-cylinder. It is paired to a single 20 kilowatt electric motor. The output of the combined gasoline-electric powertrain is 170 hp. Jetta Hybrid has good fuel economy, spacious interior, and a smooth and quiet ride quality. In base SE trim, the Hybrid starts at £ 18,075.
