3 Top Tips To Help You Prepare for a Road Trip This Summer

With summer well under way, lots of people are making plans for their holidays. In recent years, there has been an increased trend of travelling around the United Kingdom. Are you planning a great British holiday adventure?

If so, you will doubtless drive across the UK in your car. Taking in the sights by going on a road trip is a cost-effective and fun way of building some awesome memories. The only downside is that some people don’t prepare for their adventures.

Car breakdowns happen more during the summer. They will always cause unwanted stress and inconvenience. If you want to make sure you have a kick-ass road trip, make sure you follow these top tips to have an amazing summer holiday!

#1 Give your car a health check

It’s easier (and cheaper) to fix any problems with your car before you set off on your road trip adventure. The sad truth is that a lot of car owners take their vehicles for granted. That fact will bite them when they least expect it!You should give your car a thorough health check well in advance of your road trip.

Jim from the Pentagon Group has provided a list of the main points to cover during your health check:

* Tyres - the legal tread depth is 1.6 mm in the UK and Europe. New tyres have a depth of around 8mm. If your tyres have a depth of between 2-3 mm, get them replaced. Otherwise, inspect your tyres and check the pressures on them are correct. Also check for any bulges, tears and cracks.

* Brakes - do they feel “spongy”? Does your handbrake feel too loose? Do your brakes squeal when you press down on the pedal? If any of those conditions are true, get them checked by your friendly local garage.

* Fluids - your car uses fluids to lubricate many functions within the engine bay and beyond. Oil, coolant and brake fluid are just three examples. Be sure to top up your car’s fluids. If you spot any leaks, get them addressed before they turn into bigger problems.

* Belts - all car engines use rubber drive belts. If your cam or auxiliary drive belts are cracking or fraying, get them changed as soon as possible.

#2 Clean your car inside and out

You and your family are going to be sitting inside your car for several hours at a time. Driving around in a smelly and dirty car won’t make your road trip much fun.

Before you set off, be sure to give your car a thorough exterior and interior clean. A pressure washer and some “snow foam” will make light work of even the toughest marks on your car’s bodywork and wheels.

Vacuum your car’s interior, and use upholstery cleaner to get rid of any marks on carpets and seats. A lint-free cloth and some warm water will get rid of many sticky marks on the dashboard. Glass cleaner will ensure your windows are mark and smear-free.

#3 Don't forget the Entertainment!

One final note - if you are travelling with kids, make sure they have plenty of games to keep them occupied for the journey. The last thing any parent needs is to be driving around with bored children making their lives stressful!
